Chapter 1 - The Perfect Monster

The fluorescent lights of the exclusive maternity clinic buzzed softly above my head.
I stood completely frozen as my thirty-eight-week pregnant daughter, Clara, slowly took off her silk blouse.
My breath caught in my throat when I saw her fragile, swollen body.
Horrific, deep purple bruises shaped exactly like a man's heavy boots covered her ribs and the sides of her stomach.
Tears streamed silently down her pale cheeks as she looked away from me in deep shame.
She trembled in absolute terror as she whispered that her husband had done this to her.
Dr. Julian Sterling was the city’s most beloved, prestigious, and powerful hospital director.
To the public, he was a charming philanthropist who saved lives and funded orphanages.
To Clara, he was a sadistic monster who controlled every single aspect of her existence.
She sobbed into my shoulder, confessing the flawless, sickening trap he had laid for her.
Julian had explicitly threatened that if she ever tried to leave him or tell anyone, he would personally ensure she never woke up from her upcoming C-section.
He bragged that his immense wealth, prestigious title, and total control over the medical staff made him an untouchable god in this city.
He assumed I was just a sweet, harmless retired schoolteacher who would be far too terrified to fight back against a man of his elite status.
Just then, the clinic door swung open, and Julian walked in holding a massive bouquet of expensive roses.
He flashed his trademark, million-dollar smile and asked how his two favorite girls in the world were doing.
I calmly smiled back at him, gently helping my weeping daughter tie her hospital gown so he wouldn't see her fear.
I told him we were doing absolutely wonderfully, masking the violent rage boiling inside my chest.
I was not surrendering to this arrogant psychopath.
Because the terrifying secret I had hidden for thirty years was about to be unleashed.
As we walked out of that clinic, I reached into the hidden lining of my purse and pulled out a heavy, encrypted satellite phone.
I dialed a secure international number that I had sworn I would never use again.

A cold, mechanical voice on the other end simply asked for my clearance code.
I smiled at Julian's retreating back and whispered that the Weaver was coming out of retirement.
