Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Air

The heavy mechanical hum of the ventilation system shifted into a terrifying, high-pitched whine.
A thick, yellowish gas began to seep through the industrial vents located on the ceiling of the operating room.
Clara screamed in terror, her hands desperately clutching her swollen stomach as another brutal contraction hit her.
I ripped a sterile surgical mask from a nearby supply cart and strapped it tightly over her nose and mouth.
I knew the thin paper mask would only buy us a few extra seconds against military-grade corrosive gas.
I rushed to the electronic control panel beside the sealed blast doors.
Julian had completely destroyed the exterior keypad, making a simple hack entirely impossible.
I could see Julian through the small window, casually checking his expensive gold watch as he waited for us to die.
I grabbed a heavy oxygen tank from the corner of the room and dragged it toward the steel doors.
I wrapped the tank in a thick lead surgical apron to direct the force of the impending explosion.
I pulled a small block of C4 plastic explosive from my tactical vest and molded it directly onto the tank's valve.
"Cover your ears and close your eyes!" I screamed to Clara, diving behind the heavy operating table.
I triggered the detonator.
The massive explosion ripped through the surgical room, turning the heavy oxygen tank into a devastating battering ram.
The sheer force of the blast completely blew the heavy steel doors off their reinforced hinges.
The toxic yellow gas rapidly vented out into the hallway, setting off the hospital's emergency fire alarms.
I grabbed a medical wheelchair, lifted Clara's exhausted body into it, and sprinted out of the hazardous room.
Julian was lying on the floor in the hallway, completely dazed and bleeding from a massive cut on his forehead caused by the flying shrapnel.
I did not stop to finish him off.
My only priority was getting my daughter to clean air and a safe medical environment.
We reached the hospital's sterile eastern wing, far away from the toxic gas and the underground bunker.
I barricaded us inside a secure neonatal intensive care unit, locking the heavy doors with a medical override key.
Clara suddenly grabbed my arm with terrifying strength, her face turning incredibly pale.
She let out a piercing, agonizing scream that echoed off the sterile white walls.

The baby was crowning, and we were completely trapped behind enemy lines.
Julian's heavily armed private security forces were already swarming the hallway right outside our door.
