Chapter 5 - The Dead Brother

Marcus stared at me through the television screen with an incredibly cold and lifeless expression.
He told me that I had always been entirely too smart for my own good, even when we were kids.
I demanded to know why he had faked his own death and destroyed our family with these endless lies.
Marcus laughed bitterly and explained that he had stolen fifty million dollars from a ruthless drug cartel fifteen years ago.
He had faked the fiery car crash to completely erase his existence so the cartel could never find him.
Our parents had fully helped him escape, willingly sacrificing my entire future to launder his stolen money through my military accounts.
They had always chosen their favorite son over me, viewing my life as nothing more than a convenient financial tool.
Marcus explained that the cartel was finally closing in on him, and he desperately needed a brand new identity to escape again.
He revealed that my parents had recently established a massive offshore trust account entirely in my newborn son's name.
They absolutely needed physical possession of baby Leo to finalize the biometric security transfers and access the funds.
Marcus coldly offered to ensure Ethan was safely released if I simply handed over my newborn son to his men.
I looked down at my innocent baby and felt a terrifying, unstoppable rage completely take over my mind.
I told my dead brother that he would have to kill me before I ever let him touch my child.
I smashed the television screen with a heavy lamp, instantly severing the deeply disturbing video connection.
I quickly packed up my meager belongings and snuck out the back window of the motel room into the dark alley.
I knew I could no longer hide and wait for the corrupt authorities to eventually find me.
I needed to completely dismantle their criminal empire from the inside before they could hurt Ethan.
I stole a car from the motel parking lot and drove directly toward my father's downtown corporate office building.
I knew my father kept the master physical ledger of all their illegal transactions inside a hidden vault in his office.
I easily bypassed the building's outdated security system using my old investigative access codes.

I stepped onto the top floor and slowly walked toward the massive oak doors of the executive suite.
I pushed the heavy doors open and found my mother waiting for me in the dark, holding a loaded shotgun.
