Chapter 3 - The Inside Man

My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I stared at the gold watch shining on Agent Miller's wrist.
I instantly realized that the investigator on the phone had completely lied to me about sending a rescue team.
Miller was absolutely not here to protect me from my parents.
He was a corrupt insider on my father's extensive payroll, sent to ensure I never left this hospital alive.
I pretended to stumble from exhaustion and slowly leaned against the concrete pillar of the parking garage.
Miller turned around and impatiently grabbed my arm, demanding that I get into his black SUV immediately.
I subtly reached into the pocket of my hospital gown and gripped the sharp medical scalpel I had taken earlier.
I told him I needed a second to catch my breath because my surgical wound was actively bleeding.
He rolled his eyes and stepped closer, completely dropping his defensive guard for a fraction of a second.
I slashed the scalpel fiercely across the back of his hand, forcing him to drop his weapon onto the concrete.
Miller roared in severe pain and grabbed his bleeding hand, completely shocked by my sudden violence.
I kicked his discarded gun under a parked vehicle and sprinted toward the main exit of the dark garage.
A passing medical transport van abruptly stopped in front of me, and the driver yelled for me to get inside.
I didn't have time to hesitate, so I jumped into the back of the van and locked the heavy metal doors.
The driver sped away into the night, easily losing Miller in the chaotic maze of city traffic.
I thanked the driver profusely and borrowed his phone to log into my secure military cloud server.
I needed to desperately contact my husband, Ethan, who was currently deployed on a classified mission overseas.
I accessed his encrypted communication channel and sent an urgent distress signal using our personal code word.
The screen loaded for several agonizing minutes before a response finally popped up on the digital display.
The message was not from my loving husband.
It was a live video feed originating from a dark, undisclosed location halfway across the world.

The video showed my younger sister, Victoria, casually sitting in Ethan's designated military command tent.
She smiled wickedly into the camera and held up Ethan's bloodstained dog tags for me to see clearly.
