Chapter 2 - The False Vacation

I dropped the phone and scrambled out of the hospital bed despite the agonizing pain in my abdomen.
My emergency C-section stitches felt like they were actively tearing apart with every sudden movement I made.
I grabbed my sleeping newborn and quickly backed away into the dark shadows of the small adjoining bathroom.
The hospital door pushed open, revealing my mother and father dressed in dark, ordinary clothes instead of vacation attire.
They had completely faked their Caribbean cruise using edited photographs just to establish an airtight alibi.
My father stepped into the room and immediately noticed that my bed was empty.
He pulled a heavy, suppressed pistol from his jacket pocket and signaled for my mother to check the closets.
My own parents had come to the hospital armed with a deadly weapon to deal with their troublesome daughter.
I realized they needed to eliminate me before I could completely expose the massive fraud ring they had built with Marcus.
I placed Leo gently into the deep hospital sink and grabbed a sharp medical scalpel from a nearby surgical tray.
My mother approached the bathroom door and slowly pushed it open with a cruel smile on her face.
Before she could speak, I forcefully kicked the heavy wooden door directly into her face.
She screamed and stumbled backward into the main room, completely disoriented by the sudden impact.
I grabbed Leo, lunged out of the bathroom, and sprinted blindly down the brightly lit hospital corridor.
My father yelled my name and rushed out into the hallway, raising his weapon toward my back.
I slammed my hand against the red emergency fire alarm on the wall, triggering blaring sirens and flashing strobe lights.
The sudden chaos caused my father to hesitate, giving me just enough time to duck into a crowded stairwell.
I ran down three flights of concrete stairs before my weakened legs finally gave out from the intense physical trauma.
I collapsed onto the cold landing, clutching my baby and praying that the federal security team would find me.
Suddenly, a tall man in a dark suit kicked open the stairwell door and aimed a flashlight directly at my face.
He lowered his weapon and calmly introduced himself as Agent Miller from the Department of Defense.
I breathed a sigh of immense relief and allowed him to help me to my feet.

But as he guided me toward his secure vehicle in the parking garage, I noticed a very familiar gold watch on his wrist.
It was the exact same custom watch my father had worn in the fake cruise ship photographs.
