Chapter 1 - The Dead Account

The sterile walls of the military hospital felt like a freezing cage as I clutched the phone tightly to my ear.

My newborn son, Leo, whimpered softly against my chest while the senior investigator's terrifying words echoed in my mind.

The account receiving my stolen military benefits belonged to someone who had been legally dead for fifteen years.

I closed my eyes and asked the investigator for the name attached to the offshore routing numbers.

The man on the other end of the line hesitated before revealing the impossible truth.

The money was being funneled directly to a man named Marcus Mitchell.

Marcus was my older brother who had supposedly died in a horrific car crash when I was only twelve years old.

My parents had held a closed-casket funeral and spent years using his tragic death to manipulate our entire family.

I told the investigator that there must be some kind of clerical error in their database.

The investigator assured me that the Department of Defense did not make mistakes with this level of financial tracking.

He then asked me a question that made my blood run completely cold.

He wanted to know exactly where my parents were at this very moment.

I explained that they were currently celebrating their retirement on a luxury Caribbean cruise with my younger sister.

The investigator let out a sharp, heavy breath that crackled through the secure phone connection.

He told me that their cyber division had just pinged the cellular signals of both my mother and my father.

They were absolutely not on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean.

Their cell phones were currently pinging from inside the main elevator of my military hospital.

I looked through the small glass window of my hospital room and stared into the empty hallway.

The investigator warned me that my parents were coming to my floor right now.

He instructed me to lock my door and wait for a federal security detail to arrive.

Before I could even respond, the heavy handle of my hospital room door began to slowly turn.
