Chapter 6 - The Broken Safe
Vanessa smiled wickedly as she admired her expensive weapon in the bright light.
She calmly stated that she knew Margaret would eventually reveal the secret hiding spot.
Emily froze in place with her hand still resting near the hidden metal safe.
Vanessa commanded her to step away from the wall immediately or die on the spot.
Emily slowly raised her hands and took a cautious step backward into the center of the room.
Vanessa gracefully walked forward and examined the broken wooden panel with deep satisfaction.
She boasted that destroying the red ledger would officially make her unstoppable.
She explained that Daniel's wealth would soon be entirely hers once she married him tomorrow.
Emily stared into Vanessa's cold eyes and asked how she could be so incredibly evil.
Vanessa laughed sharply and said that unlimited power always required absolute ruthlessness.
She raised her pistol and aimed it flawlessly at the center of Emily's forehead.
She cruelly whispered that it was finally time to eliminate the bastard daughter permanently.
Suddenly, the heavy metal safe inside the wall began to beep loudly.
A red light flashed furiously on the digital keypad of the security box.
Vanessa frowned in confusion and lowered her weapon slightly to look at the safe.
The metal door violently blew open with a blinding flash of smoke and sparks.
The booby-trapped safe released a thick cloud of suffocating tear gas into the small room.
Vanessa screamed in sheer agony as the acidic smoke burned her eyes and throat.
She dropped her gun and collapsed heavily onto the floor while coughing violently.
Emily quickly grabbed the red leather ledger from the debris before the smoke overwhelmed her.
She snatched Vanessa's dropped pistol and kicked the villain aggressively in the ribs.
Emily bolted out of the storage room and ran blindly through the gas-filled hallways.
She burst through the front doors of the boathouse and gasped deeply for fresh air.
She sprinted desperately toward the tree line where Daniel was supposed to be waiting.
But when she reached the edge of the dark forest, Daniel was nowhere to be found.
Instead, she found his bulletproof vest covered entirely in fresh, dark blood.
