Chapter 3 - The Cold Cell

Margaret slumped heavily against the concrete wall of the cell.

Emily screamed in sheer terror and desperately pressed her hands against the bleeding wound.

She yelled frantically for help, but the police station hallway remained entirely silent.

A tall figure stepped slowly into the doorway of the holding cell.

It was the lead detective assigned to her robbery case.

He calmly holstered his smoking weapon and looked down at the two women with dead eyes.

He coldly stated that prisoners trying to escape would always be met with lethal force.

Emily cried and insisted that they were not trying to escape at all.

The detective ignored her and aggressively kicked the leather briefcase across the floor.

He picked up the scattered birth certificate documents and placed them carefully in his pocket.

He sneered that Vanessa paid extremely well to keep dirty family secrets buried permanently.

Margaret coughed weakly and grabbed Emily's wrist with trembling, blood-stained fingers.

She pulled Emily close and whispered a frantic address into her ear.

Margaret told her to find the red ledger hidden in the walls of the old boathouse.

The detective raised his gun again to finish the horrific job.

Emily realized she had absolutely nothing left to lose in this desperate moment.

She grabbed Margaret's heavy briefcase from the floor and swung it upward with all her strength.

The solid brass corner of the case smashed directly into the detective's jaw.

He groaned in pain and dropped his weapon as he fell backward onto the hard tiles.

Emily grabbed the keys from his belt and quickly unlocked her heavy handcuffs.

She turned to help Margaret, but the older woman had already stopped breathing.

Tears blinded Emily as she gently closed Margaret's lifeless eyes.

She knew she had to leave immediately before more corrupt cops arrived.

She grabbed the detective's dropped gun and sprinted down the back hallway of the precinct.

The emergency exit alarm blared loudly as she kicked the heavy metal door open.

She ran wildly into the freezing rain, disappearing into the dark city streets.

Emily was now a fugitive wanted for armed robbery and the murder of a police officer.

She checked her pockets and realized she had no money and nowhere safe to hide.

Suddenly, a sleek black SUV pulled up perfectly beside her on the empty sidewalk.

He looked at her with an intense expression and told her to get inside immediately.
