Chapter 9 - The Jeweler's Daughter

Ruggero pointed his gun at my chest, completely unaware of the lethal weapon hidden in my pocket.
I stopped exactly two feet away from him, close enough to smell the stale cigar smoke on his clothes.
He arrogantly told me that I would die first, followed by the sister, and finally my pathetic husband.
I looked him dead in the eyes and whispered that he had vastly underestimated the jeweler's daughter.
I pulled my hand from my pocket with lightning speed, driving the sharp steel awl directly upward.
The heavy metal spike pierced deeply into the soft flesh of Ruggero's forearm.
He howled in excruciating agony, his hand spasming wildly and dropping the hunting knife to the floor.
Elena instantly broke free from his weakened grip, diving safely behind the heavy oak sideboard.
Ruggero stumbled backward, clutching his bleeding arm and trying desperately to aim his gun at me.
Before he could even pull the trigger, three deafening gunshots completely shattered the tense silence.
Alessandro stood ten feet away, his secondary pistol smoking heavily in his steady hand.
All three bullets struck Ruggero perfectly in the chest, dropping the traitor lifelessly to the marble floor.
The absolute silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of our ragged breathing.
Alessandro dropped his gun and sprinted across the room, pulling me into a desperate, crushing embrace.
I buried my face in his torn suit, finally allowing the tears of fear and relief to fall freely.
He kissed the top of my head and whispered a million frantic apologies for everything he had put me through.
Elena crawled out from her hiding spot, and Alessandro pulled his weeping sister tightly into our embrace.
For a brief, beautiful moment, we were simply a family that had survived the impossible.
Then, the piercing, unmistakable wail of police sirens began echoing loudly from the distant highway.
Maso rushed into the room, warning us that Don Carmine had undoubtedly called the feds to finish us off.
We had less than three minutes to escape before the entire estate was swarmed by federal agents.
Alessandro grabbed my hand tightly, promising that he had a final extraction plan prepared for this exact scenario.

We ran frantically toward the secret underground tunnels beneath the wine cellar.
As we reached the heavy iron door, a bright red laser sight suddenly appeared directly on Alessandro's chest.
