Chapter 8 - Blood on Marble

The deafening echoes of gunfire and shattering glass transformed my beautiful home into a literal warzone.

Alessandro snapped the guard’s neck in one fluid motion and immediately grabbed the dead man's assault rifle.

Don Carmine, realizing the battle was entirely lost, cowardly abandoned his men and fled through the back doors.

Maso Greco suddenly burst through the shattered front windows, providing heavy covering fire for our side.

The remaining traitors began dropping one by one under the relentless, lethal precision of Alessandro and Maso.

The smoke finally began to clear, leaving an eerie, terrifying silence in the destroyed dining room.

I stood slowly, keeping my stolen pistol raised and my hands as steady as I possibly could.

Ruggero stood near the fireplace, using Elena's shivering body as a human shield against our weapons.

The sharp edge of his hunting knife was pressed so tightly against her neck that a small bead of blood appeared.

He ordered Alessandro to drop his rifle immediately, or he would slice his sister's throat wide open.

Alessandro froze completely, the absolute terror in his eyes betraying his tough, mafia exterior.

He looked at Elena, the little sister he had sacrificed everything to protect, and slowly lowered his weapon.

The heavy rifle clattered loudly against the bloodstained marble floor.

Ruggero laughed a sickening, victorious laugh, completely confident that he had regained control of the room.

He ordered me to drop my pistol as well, threatening to kill Elena right in front of my eyes.

I stared at the man who had brought so much pain and destruction into our lives.

I slowly lowered my gun to the floor, raising my hands in a gesture of complete surrender.

I told Ruggero that he had finally won, and I asked him to please let the innocent girl go.

He smirked arrogantly and demanded that I walk toward him to prove I was not hiding any other weapons.

I took a slow, deliberate step forward, my eyes locked entirely on the blade resting against Elena's neck.

Alessandro screamed my name, begging me not to get any closer to the deranged killer.

I ignored my husband and took another step, closing the distance between me and the madman.

Ruggero loosened his grip on Elena for a fraction of a second to reach for his own gun.

I slipped my hand into my coat pocket and gripped the sharp steel handle of my father's jeweler's awl.
