Chapter 1 - The Silver Secret

At exactly eight in the morning, a frantic knock echoed through the quiet jewelry shop.

I tightened my grip on a heavy steel jeweler's hammer before stepping out from the back room.

Through the frosted glass of the front door, I recognized the unmistakable silhouette of a woman.

I turned the deadbolt and pulled the heavy oak door open against the freezing Chicago wind.

The young woman from my dining room stood there, still wearing that expensive silver satin dress.

Her red lipstick was completely smeared, and her bare arms were covered in dark, violent bruises.

She looked absolutely nothing like a triumphant mistress who had just destroyed a mafia marriage.

She looked like a terrified animal begging for a safe place to hide.

I grabbed her cold wrist, pulled her inside quickly, and locked the door behind her.

She collapsed against my father's antique display case and gasped for breath.

I demanded to know why she had followed me to my sanctuary after ruining my life.

She reached into her small satin purse with hands that shook violently.

She pulled out the exact gold wedding ring I had placed in her palm last night.

I told her to keep the jewelry, but she aggressively shook her head while crying.

She placed the ring on the glass counter and pressed a hidden latch on the inner band.

The thick gold band clicked softly and split perfectly in half.

I stared in absolute shock at the tiny, black microchip hidden securely inside the hollow metal.

She looked at me with tears streaming down her bruised, exhausted face.

Alessandro did not bring me to the party to humiliate you, she whispered.

He brought me because it was the only way to publicly hand you this chip without his uncle knowing.

My heart stopped completely as the terrifying reality of her words set in.

My husband had deliberately shattered my heart in front of his enemies just to save my life.

I asked her who she really was and why she was bleeding from her wrists.

She told me her name was Elena and that she was a professional data courier.

Alessandro had hired her to extract all of Ruggero Romano's hidden financial files.

Ruggero had discovered the breach yesterday and sent his top assassins to silence her.

Alessandro staged the entire affair to smuggle the stolen data to the only person he completely trusted.

He knew I would leave the mansion for this shop, taking the evidence far away from the danger.

I picked up the hollow ring and felt the immense weight of my husband's desperate sacrifice.

Suddenly, the screeching of heavy tires echoed from the narrow alley behind my shop.

Three armored black SUVs slammed to a halt directly outside the reinforced back door.

Elena screamed and dropped to the wooden floor in pure, unadulterated terror.

May you like

Heavy boots marched toward the entrance, but they definitely did not belong to my husband's loyal guards.

The men carrying silenced automatic rifles wore the silver crest of Ruggero Romano on their jackets.
