Chapter 5 - The Devil's Bargain

Maso positioned himself firmly in front of the door, completely ready to die defending us.

I quickly pulled the microchip from the laptop, refusing to let Ruggero claim his prize.

A deep, gravelly voice echoed from the hallway, demanding that we open the door immediately.

It was not one of Ruggero's assassins, but rather Don Carmine, the ruthless head of the rival syndicate.

Maso lowered his gun slightly, confused as to why the leader of a rival family was standing outside.

I ordered Maso to open the door, knowing we had absolutely no other choice if we wanted to survive.

Don Carmine walked into the dusty room, flanked by six heavily armed, impeccably dressed guards.

He looked around the miserable maintenance office and smiled a terrifying, gold-toothed smile.

I stood my ground and told Carmine that I had the exact proof he needed to destroy Ruggero Romano.

I explained that Ruggero was planning to wipe out the commission and steal Carmine's territory.

Carmine listened silently, his dark, calculating eyes shifting between me and the terrified Elena.

I offered him the microchip in exchange for enough men to storm the Romano estate and save my husband.

Carmine extended his large, scarred hand, demanding to see the evidence before making a deal.

I placed the tiny chip into his palm, holding my breath and praying I had made the right choice.

He handed the chip to one of his technical experts, who quickly verified the data on a portable tablet.

The expert nodded sharply, confirming that every word I had just spoken was the absolute truth.

Carmine pocketed the chip and let out a loud, booming laugh that chilled me to the bone.

He told me that I was a very brave woman, but an incredibly foolish one to trust a mobster.

I asked him what he meant, feeling a sudden, sickening drop in the pit of my stomach.

Carmine signaled his guards, who instantly raised their weapons and aimed them directly at our heads.

He explained that Ruggero had already contacted him last night with a far more lucrative offer.

Ruggero had promised Carmine half of the Romano empire in exchange for delivering me and the sister alive.

Carmine smiled wickedly and told his men to bind our hands with heavy plastic zip ties.

I looked at Maso in sheer despair, realizing I had just handed our greatest enemy the key to the kingdom.

One of the guards stepped forward with a heavy black hood, preparing to plunge my world into darkness.
