Chapter 11 - The Ghost on the Line

My hands shook uncontrollably as I stared at the glowing screen of my encrypted phone.

The caller ID displayed the name of the man I had buried in a closed casket five years ago.

I looked frantically toward the glass doors of the villa, ensuring Alessandro was still inside.

Taking a deep, trembling breath, I swiped the screen and pressed the phone to my ear.

I did not say a word, waiting in absolute, terrified silence for the caller to speak first.

A heavy, raspy cough echoed through the speaker, followed by a voice that made my blood freeze.

It was my father, sounding older and far more exhausted, but unmistakably alive.

He whispered my name, his voice breaking with a mixture of desperate relief and profound terror.

I felt the stone balcony spin beneath my feet as I demanded to know how this was physically possible.

He told me there was no time to explain the fake death, the empty grave, or the years of hiding.

He warned me that the diamond ring Alessandro had just placed on my finger was a lethal tracking device.

My father explained that the Italian mafia commission had never pardoned my husband out of the goodness of their hearts.

Alessandro had purchased our freedom by selling his soul to the Bratva, the most ruthless syndicate in Russia.

The Russians had paid off the Italians, but now they owned Alessandro, and by extension, they owned me.

My father begged me to take the ring off immediately and throw it as far into the ocean as I could.

He warned that the Bratva did not leave loose ends, and they were already on their way to Sicily to collect their first debt.

Before I could ask him where he was calling from, a harsh, guttural voice speaking Russian echoed in the background of the call.

My father let out a sudden, agonizing scream before the line abruptly went completely dead.

I stood frozen in the warm Mediterranean breeze, clutching the silent phone against my chest.

I looked down at the flawless diamond ring sparkling innocently in the moonlight.

The terrible truth washed over me, completely destroying the peaceful illusion of the last three months.

My husband had not saved us from the darkness of the criminal underworld.

He had simply traded one devastating monster for an even deadlier one.

I slipped the ring off my finger, feeling a cold, unfamiliar fury building deep inside my heart.

I threw the diamond over the stone balcony, watching it disappear silently into the dark, crashing waves below.
