Chapter 4 - The Morgue Awakening

I gasped for air, pulling the heavy blanket tightly around my shivering shoulders as I looked wildly around the room.
I was sitting in the basement morgue of the county hospital.
Arthur Vance stood at the foot of the steel table, looking incredibly pleased with himself.
He explained that Nurse Hayes had successfully swapped Julian's lethal poison with a highly advanced, temporary metabolic suppressant.
The drug had drastically lowered my heart rate and completely mimicked clinical death, allowing us to legally extract my body from the estate.
I was finally safe, and as the suppressant left my system, the mysterious paralysis that had plagued me for months was slowly beginning to fade.
Arthur handed me a steaming cup of coffee and opened his sleek, silver laptop on the autopsy table.
He told me that my official funeral was scheduled for tomorrow morning, and Julian was already moving quickly to secure his stolen empire.
Arthur played a live, hidden video feed streaming directly from my living room.
I watched in absolute disgust as Julian and Serena drank my expensive champagne, celebrating my supposed demise.
Julian confidently walked over to the grand fireplace and entered the passcode to my hidden wall safe.
He reached inside to retrieve the bearer bonds he thought would fund his new, luxurious life with his mistress.
Instead of stacks of money, Julian pulled out a single, neatly folded piece of white paper.

The camera zoomed in perfectly, revealing that the paper was a legally binding document transferring legal ownership of Serena's childhood home.
Julian turned to his mistress with a look of pure, unadulterated rage, asking her why she had secretly mortgaged a property he had bought for her.
