Chapter 2 - The Suffocation

Serena crept closer to my bed, her overwhelming floral perfume making me physically nauseous.
She looked over her shoulder to ensure the hallway was empty before she leaned directly over my paralyzed body.
"I am so entirely tired of waiting for you to die," Serena whispered, her voice dripping with pure malice.
She raised the heavy feather pillow, positioning it perfectly over my nose and mouth.
I could not scream, I could not fight back, and I could not even turn my head to escape her murderous grasp.
Just as she began to press the pillow down onto my face, a sharp, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.
"What exactly do you think you are doing to my patient?"
Serena gasped and violently threw the pillow onto the floor, spinning around to face the night nurse.
Nurse Hayes stepped into the room, her eyes narrowed in deep, dangerous suspicion as she glared at my husband's mistress.
Serena stammered out a pathetic excuse about adjusting my bedding to make me more comfortable.
Nurse Hayes calmly ordered Serena out of the room, threatening to call hospital security if she ever entered without a family member present again.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Nurse Hayes walked over to my bed and locked the deadbolt.
She pulled down her surgical mask, looked directly into my eyes, and pulled a small, glowing biometric scanner from her pocket.

"Arthur sent me," she whispered, gently pressing my thumb onto the glass screen until a loud, electronic chime confirmed my legal signature.
But before we could celebrate our secret victory, Julian's furious voice boomed from the hallway as he began kicking the locked door.
