Chapter 2 - The Silent Scream

Dominic did not let a single muscle in his face betray his horrifying discovery.
He slowly handed the photograph back to the little girl through the open window frame.
He promised Mia with a remarkably steady voice that he was going to take her home today.
Marco stepped forward immediately, his fake smile failing to reach his cold eyes.
He aggressively argued that adopting a random street orphan was a dangerous liability for a mafia boss.
Dominic turned slowly and looked his betrayer dead in the eyes.
"She is not a liability, Marco," Dominic said with quiet, lethal authority.
"She is my daughter."
Marco's face drained of all color in a fraction of a second.
Sister Teresa quickly retreated to her desk to retrieve the adoption paperwork.
She handed Dominic a sealed envelope along with the legal documents.
She whispered that the woman who dropped Mia off had instructed her to give this to the father.
Dominic slipped the envelope into his tailored jacket just as Mia walked into the office.
Mia took one look at Marco and began to scream in pure, unadulterated terror.
She scrambled backward and hid underneath the nun's wooden desk, shaking violently.
Marco reached for his inside coat pocket, claiming the child was clearly mentally unstable.
Dominic drew his own weapon with blinding speed and aimed it directly at Marco's chest.
"Take your hand out empty, or you will die in a church," Dominic warned.

Marco slowly raised his empty hands, a sinister smirk creeping across his face.
"You are already a dead man, Dominic," Marco whispered.
