Chapter 6 - The Setup

The burner phone went completely dead before I could ask her for any more details.

I knew the old family cabin she was talking about because we spent our honeymoon there.

It was located twenty miles completely off the grid in the dense northern woods.

I abandoned my wrecked vehicle and hailed a passing taxi to take me out of the city limits.

The driver dropped me off at the edge of the dirt road leading into the dark forest.

I walked for two miles through the freezing mud with a heavy branch in my hand.

I finally saw the faint glow of a yellow light spilling from the cabin window.

I crept up to the wooden porch and listened closely for the sound of my crying baby.

The cabin was eerily silent except for the wind howling through the tall pine trees.

I kicked the front door open and raised the heavy branch ready to strike.

The living room was completely empty of any furniture or personal belongings.

I walked slowly into the center of the room and noticed a dark pool spreading across the floorboards.

Lying completely unconscious in the center of the blood was Brenda the child protection worker.

She had a massive head wound and was barely breathing in the freezing draft.

I dropped the branch and immediately dropped to my knees to check her weak pulse.

I pulled my personal cell phone from my pocket to dial the emergency dispatch.

Before the call could even connect bright red and blue lights flooded the cabin windows.

Three police cruisers had pulled up silently on the dirt road behind me.

Detective Reynolds kicked the door wider and pointed his service weapon directly at my chest.

He smiled wickedly and loudly announced that I was under arrest for the brutal attempted murder of a state employee.
