Chapter 3 - The Empty Crib

I told the detective that we were the only two people who had keys to that house.

Reynolds asked me if there was absolutely anyone else who knew the security code to the back door.

My blood ran completely cold as a familiar face flashed through my mind.

My wealthy mother-in-law Eleanor was the only other person who possessed our alarm code.

Eleanor practically funded our entire lifestyle and demanded a key for emergencies.

Before I could voice my terrifying suspicion the heavy double doors of the ward swung open.

Eleanor marched down the hallway wearing a pristine designer coat and a furious expression.

She ignored me entirely and walked straight up to the child protection worker.

Eleanor loudly declared that I was a violent psychopath who had almost beaten her daughter to death.

She claimed I was the one poisoning the baby to frame her precious daughter.

I stepped forward and yelled that she was the one who stole the camera footage.

Eleanor turned to me with a chillingly calm and calculated smile on her face.

She whispered that nobody would ever believe a man who attacks his wife with a frying pan.

Eleanor handed a thick envelope of legal documents directly to Brenda.

The paperwork was an emergency injunction granting Eleanor temporary guardianship of my son.

I lunged forward to grab the papers but Detective Reynolds held me back by the shoulders.

I screamed that they were going to kill my baby if they let her take him.

A nurse rushed out of the pediatric intensive care unit looking completely frantic.

She looked directly at the detective and said the infant was no longer in his bed.

My son had completely vanished from the secure hospital wing.
