Chapter 5 - The Cut Brakes

My hands shook violently as I stared at the detective's signature on the old case file.

Reynolds was not just a random cop assigned to my domestic disturbance call tonight.

He was actively working with Eleanor to cover up the horrific crimes of her daughter.

I realized I was completely alone in this fight and could not trust law enforcement.

I started my car and threw the transmission into reverse to escape the hospital parking lot.

I needed to reach my home to search for any other hidden evidence before they destroyed it.

I accelerated down the steep curved road leading away from the medical center.

I pressed my foot heavily onto the brake pedal as I approached a sharp intersection.

The pedal sank completely to the floorboards with absolutely no resistance.

My heart pounded against my ribs as the car hurled forward at fifty miles per hour.

Someone had cleanly sliced the brake lines while I was sitting inside the hospital.

I yanked the emergency brake and desperately wrenched the steering wheel to the right.

The car spun wildly out of control and slammed hard into a row of metal trash cans.

The airbag deployed with a deafening crack that left my ears ringing loudly.

I kicked the jammed driver door open and stumbled out into the cold night air.

I wiped a trail of warm blood from my forehead and checked my surroundings.

A cheap disposable burner phone was suddenly ringing on the passenger seat of my wrecked car.

I reached across the deployed airbag and picked up the glowing plastic device.

I pressed the phone to my ear and heard my wife breathing heavily on the other end.

She told me she had our son and that he was crying for his father.

She promised to give him back to me if I came to the old family cabin in the woods alone.
