Chapter 5 - The Disappearing Ink

I stared at the thick stack of legal documents resting ominously on my pristine dining room table.

Greg casually poured himself a glass of the vintage wine, looking at me with the smug satisfaction of a predator cornering its prey.

"The bank is threatening immediate foreclosure, so you really need to sign these tonight," Greg lied without blinking.

Vanessa stood closely beside him, gently resting her hand on his shoulder in a way that made me completely sick to my stomach.

"Please, darling, Greg is our only hope to avoid sleeping on the freezing streets," Vanessa pleaded with fake desperation.

I slowly picked up the document, pretending to read the highly complicated, completely fraudulent legal jargon.

The contract clearly stated that in exchange for a meager loan, I was permanently surrendering all property rights to Greg's holding company.

I let out a heavy, dramatic sigh, perfectly playing the part of a broken, defeated man who had completely given up.

"You are absolutely right, I have failed this family, and I have no other choice but to accept your generous help," I whispered sadly.

Greg smiled a highly wicked, victorious smile and eagerly handed me his expensive, gold-plated fountain pen.

I shook my head slowly and reached directly into the inner pocket of my worn-out suit jacket.

"My father gave me this cheap pen before he died, I would prefer to sign my final failure with it," I insisted quietly.

Greg rolled his eyes dismissively, clearly not caring what instrument I used as long as he secured my legal signature.

I clicked my pen and carefully signed my full legal name on the bottom of all three binding contracts.

What Greg and Vanessa absolutely did not know was that I had purchased this specific pen from a specialized espionage store.

The ink flowing from the tip was entirely chemically engineered to completely vanish without a single trace after exactly twelve hours.

Greg snatched the documents eagerly from the table, his greedy eyes scanning my perfectly forged signature.

"You made the smartest decision of your entire life today, my friend," Greg laughed, shoving the papers securely into his briefcase.

Vanessa poured herself a celebratory glass of wine, entirely failing to hide her massive, overjoyed grin.

We sat down for dinner, and I endured two excruciating hours of their subtle insults and condescending remarks about my fake poverty.

They openly flirted right in front of my face, completely believing I was too blind and depressed to notice their blatant affair.

When the miserable evening finally ended, Greg stood up and tightly hugged my traitorous wife goodbye.

"I will file these documents with the city clerk first thing on Monday morning," Greg announced proudly before walking out the door.

I locked the front door behind him and turned to see Vanessa looking at me with absolute, pure disgust.

"I am going to bed, you should stay down here and clean up this miserable mess," she commanded coldly.

I happily agreed, waiting until her bedroom door clicked shut before pulling out my smartphone.

I opened the hidden camera application to ensure my mother was sleeping safely in her room down the hall.

Instead, I saw the terrifying silhouette of a masked man climbing silently through my mother's unlocked bedroom window.
