Chapter 4 - The Asylum Threat

I aggressively slammed the car door shut and sprinted up the driveway toward the unmarked medical van.
Two muscular men wearing generic white uniforms were standing on my front porch, holding a heavy canvas straightjacket.
I shoved past them violently and burst through my own front door, my heart pounding with pure, unadulterated panic.
Vanessa was standing in the hallway, holding my mother tightly by the arm while the elderly woman cried hysterically.
"What the hell is going on here?" I roared, dropping my facade of the broken, defeated husband for a split second.
Vanessa feigned a look of deep, heartbreaking tragedy, wiping a fake tear from her perfectly powdered cheek.
"Her dementia has completely taken over, darling, she tried to attack me with a kitchen knife this morning," Vanessa lied flawlessly.
My mother shook her head frantically, tears streaming down her bruised and wrinkled face.
"I didn't do anything, she just grabbed me and dragged me out of my room!" my mother sobbed desperately.
Vanessa pulled a forged medical document from her purse, waving it confidently in the air.
"Greg helped me secure an emergency psychiatric hold for her own safety, she needs professional care immediately," she stated coldly.
I knew that if those men took her, I might never be able to legally get her back from the corrupt asylum.
I took a deep breath, forcing my heart rate to slow down as I carefully resumed my role as the naive, trusting husband.
"You are right, Vanessa, but we simply cannot afford this expensive facility now that I am completely broke," I said sadly.
Vanessa's eyes flashed with deep irritation, clearly frustrated that my fake poverty was disrupting her flawless plan.
"Greg is covering the initial costs as a favor to our family, he is truly a generous friend," she replied quickly.
I stepped forward and gently pulled my trembling mother out of Vanessa's harsh, unyielding grip.
"I appreciate Greg's charity, but I refuse to send my mother away on the exact same day I returned home," I insisted firmly.
I promised Vanessa that I would personally take my mother to the facility on Monday after we sorted out our massive debts.
Vanessa glared at me, but she knew that pushing the issue too hard might raise my suspicions.
She angrily dismissed the two medical transport workers, heavily slamming the front door behind them.
I escorted my mother back to her bedroom, assuring her that she was completely safe and would never leave this house.
I walked down to the living room, where Vanessa was aggressively arranging expensive hors d'oeuvres on a silver platter.
The doorbell chimed loudly, echoing through the tense, suffocating atmosphere of the quiet house.
Vanessa eagerly rushed to the door and opened it to reveal Greg, holding a highly expensive bottle of vintage wine.
He walked in with the supreme confidence of a man who believed he already owned everything in the building.
Greg shook my hand firmly, offering a patronizing, fake look of deep sympathy for my supposed financial ruin.
"It is truly a tragic shame about your company, but I am here to help you navigate this total disaster," Greg lied smoothly.
He pulled a thick stack of legal documents from his expensive leather briefcase and placed them on my dining table.

"Just sign these emergency loan papers, and I will personally save you from absolute bankruptcy," he smiled wickedly.
I looked down at the papers, knowing that my signature would instantly transfer the deed of my house directly to his corrupt firm.
