Chapter 2 - The Stolen Sheets

I stared at the glowing computer screen in absolute, stunned silence as the video file played.
The hidden camera in the master bedroom had captured crystal-clear footage from just two nights ago.
Vanessa was not alone in the room that we were supposed to share as husband and wife.
She was passionately kissing a tall, well-dressed man who had his hands wrapped tightly around her waist.
My stomach churned violently when the man turned his face toward the hidden camera lens.
It was Greg, my supposedly loyal corporate attorney and the man I had trusted to watch over my estate.
I watched in sheer disgust as they collapsed onto our bed, laughing and whispering to each other.
I fast-forwarded the footage to the next morning, needing to hear exactly what they were plotting.
Greg was tying his expensive silk tie while Vanessa handed him a cup of hot coffee.
"He called me yesterday to say the business failed, so he is coming home completely bankrupt," Vanessa laughed cruelly on the recording.
Greg smiled a highly sinister, predatory smile that made my blood run cold.
"Then we execute the final phase of the plan this weekend," Greg replied confidently.
"We will force him to sign the emergency loan documents, which actually transfer the deed of this house directly to my firm."
Vanessa wrapped her arms around his neck, looking deeply into the eyes of my betrayer.
"And what about the old hag living down the hall?" she asked with pure malice.
Greg promised her that he had already forged the medical documents required to lock my mother in a state-run asylum permanently.
I paused the video, my hands shaking with an uncontrollable, righteous rage.
They were not just trying to steal my home and my money.
They were actively conspiring to destroy my elderly mother's entire life and steal her freedom.
I wanted to storm into the master bedroom right then and violently throw Vanessa out into the freezing rain.
But revealing my hand too early would allow Greg to destroy the forged documents and escape justice.
I calmly closed the laptop, formulating a meticulous plan to completely ruin them both.
I walked quietly into our bedroom, where Vanessa was pretending to read a fashion magazine.
I handed her a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box that I had purchased at the airport.
"I know I came home broke, but I bought this with the last of my savings just for you," I lied flawlessly.
Vanessa opened the box, her eyes briefly flashing with intense disappointment when she saw the cheap, cubic zirconia necklace.
"It is absolutely gorgeous, darling," she lied, forcing a fake smile as she set it on the nightstand.
She reached over to turn off the bedside lamp, entirely unaware of the storm brewing inside me.
"Greg is coming over tomorrow night to discuss your financial ruin," Vanessa whispered in the dark.
She casually mentioned that Greg had a brilliant solution to save us from absolute poverty.

I closed my eyes and smiled in the darkness, knowing exactly what trap they were setting for me.
But my quiet satisfaction was shattered when I heard the distinct, terrifying sound of breaking glass coming from my mother's bedroom.
