Chapter 9 - The Confession

I scrambled backward across the blood-slicked linoleum floor, gasping frantically for air.

The deafening ringing in my ears slowly faded, replaced by the sound of heavy groaning.

I looked down and saw Thomas clutching his right shoulder in absolute agony.

During our desperate struggle for the weapon, he had accidentally discharged the shotgun directly into his own collarbone.

I quickly kicked the discarded firearm across the room, ensuring he could not reach it again.

Seconds later, a heavily armed SWAT team burst through the shattered doorway with their rifles raised.

They immediately pinned the bleeding, disgraced officer to the ground and slapped heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

I ran over to the hospital bed and pulled my weeping wife into a massive, crushing embrace.

We held each other tightly as paramedics rushed into the room to check on our incredibly brave baby.

The nightmare of violence and betrayal that had invaded our lives was finally coming to an end.

Thomas was dragged out of the room on a stretcher, cursing our family's name as he disappeared down the hallway.

The lead detective approached us a few hours later, offering a warm and reassuring smile.

He confirmed that Thomas would be facing multiple life sentences for attempted murder, corruption, and armed assault.

My wife wept tears of pure relief, knowing her brother could never hurt our family again.

Our baby underwent the final skin graft surgery the very next morning with miraculous success.

The brilliant pediatric surgeons assured us that his young skin would heal perfectly with almost no permanent scarring.

We spent the next several days in a quiet, private recovery suite, completely surrounded by a heavy police guard.

We spent every waking moment holding our son, promising to protect him from the evils of the world.

On the day we were finally cleared to leave the hospital, the lead detective stopped by our room for one last update.

He looked incredibly serious as he closed the door behind him and handed me a printed transcript.

"Thomas confessed to all the charges during his interrogation last night," the detective stated grimly.

"But he claimed the plan to steal the inheritance wasn't actually his idea," the detective warned.

"He swore on the record that someone else inside your house gave him the exact layout and schedule to pull this off."
