Chapter 4 - The Family Betrayal

I stared at the cracked screen of my phone on the restroom floor, completely paralyzed by shock.
My own brother-in-law had tortured my wife and nearly killed his own infant nephew.
Thomas was a decorated police officer who had always seemed incredibly protective of our family.
I desperately tried to comprehend what could possibly motivate such an act of unspeakable cruelty.
I picked up my phone and quietly slipped out of the restroom, blending into the busy hospital corridor.
I needed to get my wife away from the detectives before Thomas could use his badge to silence her permanently.
I hurried back to the surgical waiting room, hoping the doctor had an update on my son's condition.
A weary surgeon stepped through the double doors and immediately motioned for me to approach.
He explained that they had successfully stabilized the burns, but my baby would require emergency skin graft surgery.
I felt a brief wave of relief knowing my son was alive, but the danger was far from over.
I pulled out my phone and drafted a text message to Thomas, pretending I was just a terrified father seeking family support.
I asked him to come to the hospital immediately to help me deal with the overwhelming police presence.
My phone buzzed almost instantly with a short, chilling reply.
The message read, "I am already waiting for you in the main lobby, Mark."
I took a deep breath, forcing my racing heart to slow down as I walked toward the elevators.
I stepped out into the bright hospital lobby and immediately spotted Thomas wearing his crisp police uniform.
He rushed over to me with a look of deep, fabricated concern etched across his face.
He pulled me into a tight embrace, playing the role of the supportive family member perfectly.
As he pulled away, I noticed a deep, fresh scratch running along the side of his neck.
It was the exact spot where my wife had desperately clawed at him in the security footage.
I swallowed the burning rage rising in my throat and pretended not to notice the wound.
Thomas handed me a steaming cup of coffee and patted me firmly on the shoulder.
He leaned in incredibly close, ensuring none of the passing nurses could hear his next words.

"I know you checked the cloud cameras in the hallway, Mark," Thomas whispered coldly into my ear.
"If you show that video to anyone, I will personally walk upstairs and pull the plug on your kid's life support."
