Chapter 7 - The Audio Evidence

The lead detective's skeptical expression vanished the moment my wife handed him the tiny, electronic infant sock.

He immediately escorted us into a secure hospital security office and locked the heavy metal door.

He connected the small device to his encrypted police laptop to extract the hidden audio files.

My wife gripped my hand so tightly her fingernails dug painfully into my skin.

The detective clicked play, and the chilling sound of our baby crying filled the small office.

Then, the unmistakable, arrogant voice of Officer Thomas Vance echoed from the computer speakers.

"Put the kid in the water right now, Sarah, or I will put a bullet in his brain," Thomas threatened on the recording.

The audio captured my wife pleading desperately, begging her brother to take the inheritance money and leave them alone.

It captured the horrific moment the baby was lowered into the scalding water, followed by agonizing, high-pitched screams.

The detective's face turned completely pale as he listened to a fellow officer commit such an atrocity.

He slammed his fist against the desk in sheer anger and immediately grabbed his police radio.

He contacted the central precinct and demanded an emergency arrest warrant for Officer Thomas Vance.

He ordered every available unit to lock down the perimeter of the hospital and search every floor.

"We have him dead to rights," the detective promised us, his voice shaking with righteous fury.

He assured us that my wife was completely cleared of all suspicion and would not face any charges.

We finally felt a massive, suffocating weight lift off our shoulders as the truth was officially recognized.

A team of armed officers escorted us back to the intensive care unit to wait by our son's bedside.

I sat in the uncomfortable plastic chair and watched my baby sleep peacefully under the medical bandages.

I gently stroked my wife's hair, whispering soft promises that our nightmare was finally coming to an end.

Suddenly, a deafening, blaring siren erupted from the hospital's emergency broadcast system.

The heavy steel lockdown doors at the end of the hallway slammed shut automatically.

A frantic, mechanical voice echoed through the overhead intercom speakers across the entire medical facility.

"Code Silver in effect," the automated voice announced repeatedly.

"Active shooter reported on the pediatric intensive care floor, please shelter in place."

I looked through the glass window of our room and saw a tall figure in a police uniform marching down the hall holding a shotgun.
