Chapter 1 - The Hidden Threat

I stared at the glowing screen of my wife's phone in absolute horror.

The preview message from her friend Chloe was only a single sentence long.

But that one sentence was enough to completely shatter the fragile lie she had just told the emergency room doctor.

The message read, "I heard a man telling you not to pick up the baby, Sarah, what is going on?"

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped animal.

My wife had just sworn to the doctor that she was completely alone in the house.

She had claimed it was a simple, tragic accident caused by her own terrible negligence.

I slowly raised my eyes and looked at the woman I had married.

She was walking away with the hospital social worker, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

I was left entirely alone in the cold hallway with her unlocked phone in my hand.

My newborn son was fighting for his life behind a set of heavy surgical doors.

His tiny body had been severely burned in a basin of scalding hot water.

I felt a sickening wave of nausea wash over my entire body as I processed the text message.

If there was a man in our house, this was no longer just a case of terrible parenting.

This was something infinitely more sinister and dangerous.

I quickly tapped the screen to open the rest of the conversation with her friend Chloe.

My hands shook violently as I scrolled through the recent messages.

Chloe had sent dozens of frantic texts while I was driving to the hospital.

She had asked why Sarah suddenly stopped talking and started crying.

She had asked why the baby was screaming so loudly in the background.

But the most terrifying message was the one that had just arrived.

I immediately pressed the call button to speak with Chloe directly.

The line rang three times before she answered with a breathless gasp.

"Sarah, please tell me the baby is okay," Chloe cried into the phone.

"It is Mark, and I need you to tell me exactly what you heard," I demanded with a trembling voice.

Chloe went completely silent on the other end of the line.

"You sent a text mentioning a man in my house," I pressed further.

"Mark, I think your wife is in terrible trouble," Chloe finally whispered.

She told me she had heard heavy footsteps approaching Sarah right before the baby started screaming.

She heard a deep, unrecognizable male voice give Sarah a terrifying command.

The man had told my wife that if she pulled the baby out of the water, he would kill her.

My blood froze completely in my veins as the reality of the situation set in.

My wife had not ignored our child because she was distracted by gossip.

She had been held hostage in our own bathroom by a violent intruder.

Before I could ask Chloe anything else, a heavy hand clamped down on my shoulder.

I spun around and found two uniformed police officers standing directly behind me.
