Chapter 8 - The Siege

The terrifying sound of a heavy shotgun blast echoed violently through the pediatric intensive care corridor.
Thomas was completely out of his mind, shooting the electronic locks off the heavy security doors.
He knew the audio evidence had been extracted, and he was determined to eliminate the only witnesses to his crime.
I frantically grabbed the heavy metal medical cart and shoved it hard against our hospital room door.
I stacked every piece of available furniture against the barricade, my heart pounding with sheer adrenaline.
My wife crouched underneath the thick steel frame of the hospital bed, shielding our baby's fragile body with her own.
"Do not make a single sound, no matter what happens," I whispered fiercely to her.
Heavy, methodical footsteps approached our room, crunching loudly on the shattered glass covering the hallway floor.
Thomas stopped directly outside our door and let out a dark, menacing laugh.
"You really thought a smart-sock was going to ruin my life, Mark?" Thomas taunted through the wooden door.
He pumped the shotgun with a terrifying, mechanical clack that sent shivers down my spine.
He aimed the barrel directly at the door handle and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
The deafening blast blew the metal lock completely to pieces, sending wood splinters flying across the room.
Thomas kicked the door open violently, shoving the heavy medical cart aside with brutal force.
He stepped into the room, his eyes wide with madness as he leveled the weapon toward the hospital bed.
I did not waste a single second waiting for him to aim properly.
I grabbed the heavy red fire extinguisher from the wall bracket and swung it with all my strength.
The solid metal cylinder connected squarely with the side of his face, breaking his nose with a sickening crunch.
Thomas screamed in agony and stumbled backward, but his finger remained dangerously tight on the trigger.
We crashed onto the linoleum floor together in a desperate, violent struggle for control of the shotgun.
I punched him repeatedly in the face, fighting with the primal fury of a father protecting his family.
Thomas managed to wedge his knee against my chest and yanked the weapon upward.

A blinding flash of fire erupted from the barrel as the gun discharged wildly into the small room.
The deafening noise gave way to a horrific, absolute silence as a heavy body slumped onto the bloody floor.
