Chapter 6 - The Race for Life

My wife let out a guttural scream of pure agony as we sprinted down the sterile hospital corridors.
We pushed past stunned nurses and terrified patients as we desperately raced toward the intensive care unit.
I could hear the piercing, high-pitched tone of a flatlining heart monitor echoing through the heavy surgical doors.
We reached the observation window and pressed our trembling hands against the cold glass.
Inside the room, a frantic team of doctors and nurses were performing aggressive chest compressions on our tiny baby.
I watched in absolute horror as the surgeon charged the pediatric defibrillator paddles.
The small, fragile body of my son jolted upward as the electrical current surged through his chest.
My wife collapsed against my side, weeping so violently that her knees buckled beneath her.
After what felt like an eternity of absolute torture, a slow, steady beep finally returned to the heart monitor.
The lead surgeon let out a massive sigh of relief and nodded toward us through the observation window.
Our baby had survived the assassination attempt, but I knew the danger was escalating rapidly.
Thomas had not left the hospital building after I deleted the video footage from my phone.
He had lied to my face and snuck upstairs to murder my child and frame my wife for a far worse crime.
I realized in that terrifying moment that negotiating with a monster was completely impossible.
I grabbed the lead detective who had followed us upstairs and pulled him into a quiet corner.
I told him everything about Thomas, the blackmail, the inheritance, and the deleted security footage.
The detective listened carefully, but his face remained a mask of professional skepticism.
"You are accusing a decorated police officer of attempted murder, but you have absolutely zero physical evidence," the detective stated firmly.
Without the cloud video, it was simply the word of a grieving, desperate father against a respected cop.
I felt a crushing wave of despair wash over me as I realized we were completely trapped.
My wife slowly walked over to us, wiping the endless stream of tears from her pale face.
"We do not have the video, but we have something much better," she whispered with sudden, fierce determination.
She reached deep into the pocket of her blood-stained jeans and pulled out a tiny, white fabric bootie.
"Our baby wears a smart-sock monitor that continuously records heart rate and ambient audio," she explained.

She held up the small device, her eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire.
"And it captured every single word my brother said while he held a gun to my head."
