Chapter 8 - The Breakout

The shockwave from the explosion threw us aggressively against the concrete walls of the stairwell.
Thick, black smoke instantly flooded the corridor, triggering the emergency fire suppression systems.
The four mercenaries guarding the observation wing completely abandoned their posts in the chaos, running toward the burning laboratory.
"Now!" Clara shouted, leading us through the blinding smoke.
We sprinted down the hallway and slammed our bodies against the heavy glass doors of the nursery.
The doors burst open, revealing my three beautiful daughters huddled together on a plush hospital bed.
"Mommy!" they screamed in unison, jumping off the bed and running into my open arms.
I hugged them so tightly I thought my heart would physically burst from my chest.
Clara stood awkwardly near the door, tears streaming down her pale face as she watched her biological children.
My oldest daughter looked up from my shoulder and locked eyes with Clara.
Without any hesitation, my little girl walked over and gently took Clara's trembling hand.
"You are the lady in the picture," my daughter said sweetly.
Clara broke down completely, falling to her knees and pulling the little girl into a desperate, loving embrace.
"We do not have time for this, the guards will be back any second," Mark warned, checking the hallway.
"The extraction helicopter is still on the roof helipad," I said. "If we can reach it, we can fly to the mainland."
"I know how to fly a chopper," Mark confirmed, his military training taking over.
We grabbed the girls and rushed out of the nursery, heading straight for the emergency access stairwell.
We climbed five agonizing flights of stairs, our lungs burning from the thick smoke and exhaustion.
Mark kicked open the heavy roof access door, and the freezing ocean wind whipped violently against our faces.
The helicopter was sitting completely unattended on the illuminated landing pad.
We sprinted across the wet tarmac, hope finally blooming in our desperate hearts.
But as Mark reached the cockpit door, the massive stadium floodlights on the roof suddenly snapped on.
We were instantly blinded by the intense, piercing light.
"Did you really think I would leave my transport unguarded?" Madame Aris's voice echoed through the loudspeakers.
A dozen armed guards stepped out from the shadows, forming a deadly perimeter around the helicopter.
Madame Aris walked slowly onto the helipad, flanked by Dr. Vance, who was holding a heavy assault rifle.
"It is truly a shame," Aris sighed dramatically. "I was hoping to keep the children alive for further study."
"Kill the adults, and prepare the children for immediate cryogenic freezing," Aris ordered her men.
The guards raised their weapons, preparing to execute us on the cold roof.
Mark stepped entirely in front of me and the girls, ready to take the first volley of bullets.
"Stop!" Clara screamed, stepping out from behind Mark with her hands raised in the air.
She turned to look directly at Dr. Vance, her eyes filled with a lifetime of profound betrayal and sorrow.
"If you kill them, I will jump off the edge of this roof right now, and you will lose your precious genetic goldmine forever," Clara threatened.
Dr. Vance laughed a cruel, dismissive laugh.
"You are bluffing, Clara, you are entirely too weak to end your own life," Vance sneered.
"She is not bluffing, Arthur," Evelyn yelled from the back of our group.
Evelyn walked slowly forward, staring directly into Dr. Vance's arrogant eyes.
"You never truly understood your own daughter's strength."
Madame Aris frowned in deep confusion, looking between Evelyn and the scientist.
"What is the homeless woman talking about, Arthur?" Aris demanded suspiciously.
Dr. Vance's face turned completely white as a terrifying secret was finally dragged into the light.
May you like
"He never told you?" Evelyn smiled maliciously.
"Clara is not just a random test subject, Aris... she is Arthur's biological daughter, and I am his ex-wife."
