Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Vents

The harsh glare of the surgical lights blinded me as Dr. Vance raised the sharp scalpel.

I struggled frantically against the thick leather straps binding my wrists and ankles to the metal table.

"Please, you don't have to do this," I begged, tears streaming down my face.

Dr. Vance ignored my pleas entirely, carefully examining the monitor displaying my vitals.

"Your heart is incredibly strong, Sarah, it will fetch a premium price in Macau," he noted callously.

He moved the cold steel blade closer to my exposed skin.

Suddenly, a loud, blaring siren erupted throughout the entire island facility.

Red emergency lights began flashing wildly in the surgical theater, casting terrifying shadows across the room.

The heavy intercom system crackled to life with a panicked voice.

"Security breach in Sector 4, all personnel respond immediately!" the voice shouted.

Dr. Vance cursed loudly, dropping the scalpel onto a metal tray.

"Stay right here, I will be back to finish this in five minutes," he growled, rushing out of the room and locking the door.

I was left completely alone, trapped on the table while the alarms wailed around me.

I pulled desperately at the leather straps, but they were secured far too tightly for me to break.

Then, I heard a soft, scratching sound coming from the large air conditioning vent above the operating table.

I stopped struggling and listened closely to the metallic noise.

The heavy metal grate suddenly popped open and fell onto the floor with a loud clang.

A frail, incredibly pale woman dropped silently from the ceiling onto the edge of my table.

She was wearing a dirty hospital gown, and her wrists were covered in dark, terrible bruises.

But when she looked up at me, I instantly recognized her beautiful, tired eyes.

It was Clara.

"You are the mother," Clara whispered, her voice raspy from years of disuse.

I nodded frantically, unable to speak through my overwhelming shock.

Clara quickly grabbed the discarded scalpel and sliced through the thick leather straps binding my arms and legs.

"How did you escape?" I asked as I sat up, rubbing my raw wrists.

"I have been secretly studying the ventilation maps for five years, waiting for a distraction," Clara explained quickly.

"When they brought your family in tonight, I knew it was my only chance to save my daughters."

The way she said "my daughters" broke my heart, but I knew she was absolutely right.

"We have to find Mark and your mother, Evelyn," I said, jumping off the table.

Clara's eyes widened with pure, desperate hope at the mention of her mother's name.

"My mother is alive?" Clara gasped, tears instantly welling in her eyes.

"She is in a holding cell down the hall, we have to hurry," I urged.

We slipped out of the surgical theater just as two armed guards ran past the hallway, completely ignoring us in the chaos.

We navigated the labyrinth of white corridors until we reached the maximum-security holding cells.

Clara used a stolen keycard to swipe the electronic lock on cell number seven.

The heavy steel door slid open, revealing Mark and Evelyn huddled in the corner.

Evelyn looked up, and for a moment, the entire world seemed to stop spinning.

"Clara?" Evelyn whispered, her hands shaking as she stood up.

Mother and daughter rushed into each other's arms, sobbing uncontrollably after five years of agonizing separation.

Mark hugged me tightly, kissing the top of my head in absolute relief.

"We need to get the girls from the observation wing before Vance realizes you are gone," Mark said urgently.

"I know exactly where they are," Clara stated, a fierce determination replacing her tears.

She led us down a restricted stairwell toward the heavily guarded observation deck.

We peeked around the corner and saw four heavily armed mercenaries guarding the glass doors of the nursery.

"We can't fight our way through four men with assault rifles," Mark whispered in frustration.

Clara reached into her hospital gown and pulled out a small, remote detonator.

"We don't have to fight them," Clara smiled coldly.

"I rigged the oxygen tanks in the laboratory next door to explode."

She pressed the button, and a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire facility.
