Chapter 1 - The Man in the Square

The stranger in the dark coat took a slow, deliberate step toward our family.
My husband, Mark, instinctively pushed me and our three little girls behind his broad shoulders.
The elderly homeless woman clutched my daughters tightly against her torn gray shawl.
I could feel my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
The man’s hand slowly emerged from the inner pocket of his expensive jacket.
I braced myself, fully expecting to see the cold steel of a gun pointed at us.
Instead, he pulled out a heavy, metallic syringe filled with a thick, glowing blue liquid.
"You were never supposed to meet," the man repeated, his voice completely devoid of human emotion.
Tourists walked past us in the crowded square, completely oblivious to the nightmare unfolding on the stone steps.
Mark did not wait for the man to raise the terrifying weapon.
My husband lunged forward with explosive speed, relying on his old military training.
He tackled the stranger to the hard cobblestone ground, knocking the syringe from his gloved hand.
The glass shattered upon impact, and the blue liquid hissed violently as it began to melt the ancient stone.
I screamed, suddenly realizing that the man had intended to dissolve us without a trace right in broad daylight.
The elderly woman grabbed my arm with a desperate, surprising strength.
"We have to run right now, or the rest of his team will arrive," she pleaded.
I scooped up my youngest daughter while Mark recovered and grabbed the other two girls.
We sprinted away from the crowded plaza and ducked into a narrow, winding alleyway.
The afternoon shadows swallowed us as we ran deeper into the historic, labyrinthine streets of the European city.
Mark kicked open the rusted door of an abandoned storage cellar, and we all rushed inside.
He locked the heavy iron deadbolt and leaned against the cold brick wall, gasping for air.
Our three daughters were incredibly quiet, holding onto the homeless woman as if she were their true guardian angel.
I stared at the woman in the dim light, my mind struggling to process the impossible hospital document she had shown us.
"You said your daughter Clara was the genetic mother of my children," I whispered, my voice trembling.
The woman nodded, wiping soot and tears from her weathered face.
"My name is Evelyn, and Clara was my entire world before she signed that surrogacy contract," she explained.
Mark walked over to us, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and protective rage.
"The agency in America told us Clara moved to Paris to start a new life after the delivery," Mark said.
Evelyn let out a bitter, heartbroken laugh that echoed in the damp cellar.
"They told me that she died of complications during the childbirth," Evelyn revealed.
A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room as the absolute horror of her words sank in.
Both of our families had been manipulated, lied to, and torn apart by the very doctors we trusted.
"If they told you she died, how do you know she is still out there?" I asked.
Evelyn reached deep into her torn coat and pulled out a crumpled, bloodstained piece of stationary.
"Because three days after the agency gave me an empty casket, I found this letter shoved under my door," she said.
She handed the paper to Mark, and I leaned in close to read the frantic handwriting.
The note simply said, "Mom, they are keeping me alive because of my blood, please hide."
My blood ran cold as I realized our surrogate was currently being held captive in some underground medical nightmare.
"They want Clara for her genetics, and now they want your daughters for the exact same reason," Evelyn warned us.

Before I could even speak, a high-pitched beeping sound suddenly echoed through the silent cellar.
The sound was coming directly from the silver bracelets wrapped tightly around my daughters' tiny wrists.
