Chapter 10 - The Unconventional Family

The warm summer sun poured through the large windows of our new home in the American suburbs.
It had been exactly one year since we escaped the island facility and brought the twisted agency to its knees.
Madame Aris was currently serving multiple consecutive life sentences in a federal supermax prison.
Evelyn was sitting comfortably in a rocking chair on our back porch, sipping sweet tea and watching the girls play in the yard.
The streets of Europe were a distant memory for the woman who finally had her daughter back.
I stood in the bright kitchen, chopping fresh vegetables for a massive Sunday family dinner.
Clara walked in, looking incredibly healthy and glowing with a beautiful, peaceful happiness.
She wore a simple floral dress, her dark hair pulled back to reveal the dimples she shared with the girls.
"Do you need any help, Sarah?" Clara asked, smiling warmly at me.
"Just grab the plates, sis," I replied, officially using the title we had comfortably adopted.
We had chosen not to confuse the girls with the complex, painful biology of their creation.
To them, I was Mommy, Mark was Daddy, and Clara was their magical Auntie who lived in the guest house.
We were a massive, beautiful, and wildly unconventional family forged in the fires of survival.
Mark walked through the back door, covered in grass clippings and carrying our three giggling daughters on his broad shoulders.
"Dinner is almost ready, you monsters!" I laughed, swatting Mark playfully with a kitchen towel.
The house was filled with the pure, chaotic sound of genuine love and safety.
I looked around my kitchen, feeling a profound sense of absolute peace settle deep into my soul.
We had fought the darkness, protected our children, and won the ultimate victory.
Later that evening, after the girls were tucked safely into their beds, I walked out to the front porch to check the mail.
Among the normal bills and grocery flyers, I found a heavy, unmarked manila envelope with no return address.
I broke the thick wax seal and pulled out a single, high-resolution medical ultrasound photograph.
The image clearly showed a perfectly healthy, rapidly growing baby boy with the same distinct genetic markers listed on the side.

Clipped to the terrifying photograph was a small, typed note that made my blood run entirely cold.
"You forgot one."
