Chapter 5 - The Hostage Situation

Dr. Vance locked the heavy oak doors behind him, his silver handgun aimed directly at Mark’s chest.
He was dressed in an impeccable tuxedo, looking completely composed despite the intrusion.
"You really should not have read those files, Sarah," Dr. Vance said, his voice dripping with condescension.
Evelyn stepped forward, her eyes blazing with a maternal fury I had never seen before.
"Where is my daughter, you monster?" Evelyn screamed, preparing to lunge at him.
Dr. Vance casually pointed the weapon at Evelyn's face, forcing her to freeze in her tracks.
"Clara is perfectly safe, Evelyn, she is the most valuable scientific asset in human history," he replied smoothly.
"You are a sick man," Mark growled, shielding me and the girls behind his body.
"I am a visionary," Dr. Vance corrected, walking slowly toward his mahogany desk.
"Your three daughters represent the next step in human evolution, immune to disease and natural aging."
I held my girls tightly, refusing to let this psychopath view them as mere laboratory experiments.
"You lied to us," I cried out. "You told us we were having our own biological children."
Dr. Vance chuckled as he leaned against the edge of his expensive desk.
"Your genetic material was completely unremarkable, Sarah, I simply threw it in the incinerator," he admitted callously.
The cruel words felt like a physical knife twisting deeply into my stomach.
But as I looked down at my beautiful, terrified daughters, my love for them completely eclipsed the biological truth.
They were my babies, and I would gladly die to protect them.
"So what happens now?" Mark demanded, his muscles tense and ready to spring.
"Now, you sign over all legal rights to the children, and I allow you and your wife to walk out of here alive," Vance offered.
"And if we refuse?" Mark asked.
"Then I kill you both, and I tell the authorities that Evelyn broke in and murdered you in a manic episode," Vance smiled.
He pulled a legal document from his desk drawer and threw a gold pen onto the table.
"Sign it, Mark, it is the only way your wife survives tonight," Vance ordered.
Mark looked at me, a silent conversation passing between us in a fraction of a second.
He slowly walked toward the desk, keeping his hands visible to avoid getting shot.
He picked up the gold pen and leaned over the legal document.
Instead of signing, Mark drove the sharp point of the expensive pen directly into the back of Dr. Vance’s hand.
Vance screamed in absolute agony, dropping the silver handgun onto the carpet.
Mark tackled the doctor over the desk, sending them both crashing into the bookshelves.
"Run, Sarah!" Mark shouted as he wrestled with the furious scientist.
I grabbed Evelyn and the girls, sprinting toward the heavy oak doors.
I threw the door open and rushed out into the lavish hallway.
But we didn't make it more than ten feet.
Five heavily armed security guards were waiting for us in the corridor, their assault rifles raised.
A tall, elegant woman in a red evening gown stepped out from behind the guards.

"Bring them to the extraction helicopter," Madame Aris, the agency director, commanded coldly.
"We are taking them to the facility right now."
