Chapter 9 - The Standoff

The corrupt officer dragged me out of the cruiser and forced me to walk toward the cabin.

Mark smiled a cold, victorious smile as I was shoved violently onto the wooden porch.

"I told you families don't destroy themselves over one mistake," Mark sneered, looking down at me.

He handed the officer a thick envelope overflowing with hundred-dollar bills.

The officer nodded silently, got back into his cruiser, and drove away into the dark woods.

Mark pulled a small, silver handgun from his jacket pocket and aimed it directly at my chest.

"Where is my son?" he demanded, the fake charm entirely vanishing from his voice.

I stared back at him with pure, unadulterated hatred and completely refused to speak.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me inside the dusty, abandoned cabin, throwing me onto the floor.

He began pouring highly flammable liquid from a red canister all over the wooden walls.

"If you don't tell me where he is, you will burn alone in this cabin," Mark threatened calmly.

Suddenly, the front door of the cabin creaked open, and a small, trembling voice echoed in the room.

"Leave her alone!" Leo screamed, stepping into the cabin with a heavy iron tire iron in his hands.

My heart completely stopped as I realized my brave son had walked miles through the dark woods to follow the cruiser.

Mark laughed maliciously, turning his weapon away from me and pointing it directly at our child.

"Perfect timing, buddy," Mark said, taking a slow step toward the terrified boy.

Before Mark could close the distance, the front windows of the cabin shattered violently inward.

Blinding tactical lights flooded the entire room as heavily armed men completely surrounded the building.

"FBI! Drop your weapon immediately!" a booming voice echoed through a powerful megaphone.

Mark panicked, wildly grabbing Leo by the collar and pulling him against his chest as a human shield.

He pressed the barrel of the handgun firmly against Leo's temple, screaming at the federal agents to back off.
