Chapter 5 - The Sister

The photograph proved that someone had followed our taxi straight from the hospital.
I peeked through the dusty blinds, scanning the poorly lit parking lot for any sign of David's black truck.
The lot was entirely empty, leaving me with a terrifying sense of invisible, impending danger.
I could not risk staying in this motel room for another second.
I grabbed our meager belongings and guided Leo down the rusty back staircase of the building.
We slipped into the shadows of the neighboring commercial buildings, staying far away from the streetlights.
I only had one person left in this world who could possibly help us hide.
My estranged older sister, Claire, lived in a gated community about five miles away.
We hadn't spoken in three years due to a bitter argument over our late mother's inheritance.
I hailed another cab from a busy intersection, praying Claire would put our past differences aside.
We arrived at her massive suburban home just as a violent thunderstorm began to rage overhead.
I pounded on her heavy oak door, shivering in the freezing rain while holding Leo close.
Claire opened the door, her eyes widening in absolute shock when she saw my battered, soaking-wet son.
"Please, Claire, we have nowhere else to go," I begged, tears streaming freely down my face.
She did not hesitate for a second, immediately pulling us inside and locking the heavy door.
She provided warm towels, dry clothes, and a bowl of hot soup for Leo in her massive kitchen.
I quickly explained the entire horrific situation, detailing Mark's abuse and the corrupt social worker.
Claire listened intently, her face full of deep, sisterly concern and righteous anger.
She promised that we could stay hidden in her guest house for as long as we needed.
I walked to the kitchen island to grab a napkin for Leo's spill.
My eyes fell upon an open envelope sitting carelessly next to Claire's mail pile.

It was a bank statement showing a massive, fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer deposited earlier that afternoon.
The name on the sending account belonged entirely to my husband, Mark.
