Chapter 10 - The Resolution

The blinding tactical lights illuminated the absolute terror on my son's face as Mark held him hostage.
"Do not take another step, or I will end this right now!" Mark screamed at the approaching FBI agents.
I knew my husband was entirely arrogant, but he was also a complete coward when properly challenged.
I slowly pushed myself up from the floor, my handcuffed hands still secured behind my back.
"You don't have the courage to shoot him, Mark," I yelled, deliberately drawing his manic attention away from Leo.
Mark instinctively turned his head toward me, enraged by my sudden defiance.
In that crucial split second of distraction, Leo violently slammed his heavy boots backward into Mark's kneecap.
Mark groaned in sudden pain, his grip loosening just enough for Leo to break entirely free.
An FBI sniper outside took the immediate shot, firing a non-lethal rubber bullet directly into Mark's shoulder.
Mark collapsed to the wooden floor, dropping the handgun as tactical agents swarmed the cabin.
They pinned him down, securing him in heavy steel handcuffs and reading him his federal rights.
An agent quickly unlocked my cuffs, and I fell to my knees, pulling Leo into the tightest, safest embrace of my life.
The lead FBI agent explained that the hospital doctor had wisely bypassed the local police and contacted federal authorities directly.
They had been tracking Mark's financial movements and the corrupt officer's cruiser the entire night.
Six months later, Mark was convicted of attempted murder, insurance fraud, and severe child abuse, receiving a life sentence.
The corrupt police officer, the compromised social worker, and my treacherous sister all faced severe federal conspiracy charges.
Leo and I moved to a beautiful, quiet coastal town completely on the other side of the country.
We bought a small house with a huge backyard, and Leo finally started playing like a normal, happy kid again.
The horrific nightmare was completely over, and our lives were finally filled with genuine peace and safety.
I spent the afternoon unpacking the very last box of Leo's old belongings from our previous house.
I pulled out his old school backpack to wash it, unzipping a hidden, torn compartment at the very bottom.
A cheap, prepaid burner phone fell out of the lining and landed heavily on the kitchen floor.

The screen suddenly lit up with an incoming call from an unknown, blocked caller ID.
I answered it with a trembling hand, and a cold, unfamiliar voice whispered, "Mark paid me in advance, and I always finish the job."
