Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

I stared at the bank statement, the horrific truth crashing down on me like a physical blow.

Claire had not taken us in out of the kindness of her heart or sudden sisterly love.

She had been paid a massive sum of money to act as a trap for her own flesh and blood.

I slowly turned around, finding Claire standing in the kitchen doorway with a dark, guilty expression.

"Mark said you were having a breakdown and might come here," Claire admitted, completely avoiding my eyes.

She explained that Mark had paid her to keep us calm and notify him the moment we arrived.

"He is on his way here right now to take Leo home," she stated, as if it were a perfectly normal family dispute.

I grabbed the heavy cast-iron frying pan resting on the stove and brandished it toward my sister.

"If you try to stop us from leaving, I will strike you," I threatened, my voice shaking with pure, unadulterated rage.

Claire backed away immediately, holding her hands up in a gesture of terrified surrender.

I grabbed Leo's hand and bolted through the sliding glass doors into the dark, rainy backyard.

We scrambled over the wooden fence, dropping heavily into the muddy alleyway behind her property.

The sound of screeching tires echoed from the front of the house as Mark's car violently pulled into the driveway.

We ran down the dark alley, desperately searching for any way to escape the gated community.

I found Claire's spare car, an old sedan, parked near the community maintenance shed with the keys hidden in the visor.

I had seen her hide the spare keys there years ago when we were still speaking.

I threw Leo into the passenger seat, started the engine, and sped away just as Mark ran into the backyard.

We drove silently for twenty minutes, the tension in the car thick enough to cut with a knife.

"Mom," Leo finally spoke, his voice trembling slightly in the dark cabin.

"The reason Dad grabbed me today wasn't just because I was trying to call you."

I looked at my son, my heart pounding loudly in my ears.

"I opened his office safe, and I saw what he was planning to do to you," Leo confessed.
