Chapter 3 - The Discovery

I could not breathe as I stared at the horrifying landscape of bruises covering my child's fragile body.

"Leo, where did these come from?" I asked, my voice cracking into a desperate sob.

Leo stared down at his shoes, entirely refusing to look me in the eye.

The doctor immediately signaled the nurse to step outside and make a mandatory phone call.

"He does this when you work the night shift," Leo finally whispered, tears spilling onto his cheeks.

My heart shattered into a million irreparable pieces right there in the sterile hospital room.

For months, my husband had been systematically abusing our son while I was saving lives as a night-shift nurse.

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" I cried, pulling him into a gentle, careful embrace.

"He said he would hurt you if I ever said a word," Leo sobbed into my shoulder.

The doctor returned to the room, his expression deeply serious and entirely professional.

"I have legally mandated protocols to follow, and Child Protective Services has already been dispatched," the doctor explained.

I nodded vigorously, feeling a massive wave of relief that the authorities were finally involved.

I wanted my husband arrested, prosecuted, and locked away for the rest of his miserable life.

We waited in the examination room for an hour while Leo's eye was carefully stitched and bandaged.

A sharp knock echoed on the wooden door before it slowly swung open.

A woman in a sharp business suit walked into the room carrying a thick leather clipboard.

I stood up to greet the social worker, fully prepared to tell her absolutely everything.

The woman lowered her clipboard, and a cold, chilling smile spread across her face.

It was Diane, a woman my husband had introduced me to at a corporate dinner party three months ago.

She was not just a social worker, but a close, personal friend of my husband's wealthy family.

"Mark called me and said you were having a severe mental health episode tonight," Diane said smoothly.
