Chapter 4 - The Threat

Diane stepped further into the room, locking the hospital door quietly behind her.

"Mark is very worried about your paranoid delusions," she continued, her tone dripping with fake sympathy.

I stepped firmly in front of Leo, shielding him from the corrupt woman standing before us.

"My husband is beating our child, and you are going to cover it up," I stated, staring her down.

Diane sighed dramatically, flipping through the blank pages on her official clipboard.

"I see a clumsy boy who fell on a playground and a mother suffering from severe exhaustion," she replied.

She casually mentioned that it would be a shame if I lost custody due to my sudden mental instability.

She was actively threatening to take my son away and hand him directly back to his abuser.

I realized with absolute certainty that this hospital was no longer a safe place for us.

I needed to get Leo out of this building before Diane filed her fraudulent, devastating report.

"I need to use the restroom," I said, grabbing my purse and Leo's hand in one swift motion.

Diane frowned, stepping slightly to the side but keeping a watchful eye on us.

I walked calmly past her, pushing the door open and stepping out into the chaotic emergency room hallway.

The moment we turned the corner, I picked Leo up in my arms and sprinted toward the rear exit.

We burst through the heavy fire doors and out into the cold, rainy night.

I flagged down a passing taxi and threw a fifty-dollar bill at the driver.

I gave him the address of a cheap, rundown motel located on the absolute edge of the city limits.

We arrived at the motel and secured a room on the second floor, locking the deadbolt tightly.

I collapsed onto the sagging mattress, pulling my shivering son close to my chest.

My cell phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket, displaying a text message from an unknown number.

I opened the message, and my blood instantly turned into solid ice.

The text contained a photograph of the motel sign outside our window, taken from the parking lot below.
