Chapter 7 - The True Motive

I gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned completely white.

"What did you see in the safe, Leo?" I asked, keeping my eyes fixed on the dark, rainy road.

Leo took a deep, shaky breath, nervously twisting the fabric of his seatbelt.

"I saw two foreign passports with different names, but they had pictures of me and Dad inside," he explained quietly.

My mind raced as the horrific implications of his words began to truly set in.

"There was also a lot of cash, a gun, and a printed life insurance paper with your name on it," Leo continued.

Mark was not just an abusive husband struggling with anger management issues.

He had carefully orchestrated a plan to murder me, collect a massive insurance payout, and flee the country with my son.

Leo had desperately tried to call me to warn me before Mark caught him in the office.

This completely explained why Mark was hunting us with such relentless, calculated desperation.

He knew that if Leo told me about the safe, his entire murderous plot would be exposed and ruined.

I pressed the accelerator harder, determined to cross the state line and reach a federal FBI field office.

I could not trust the local police, the hospitals, or even my own family anymore.

As we merged onto the main interstate highway, the blinding glare of red and blue lights flashed in my rearview mirror.

A single police cruiser pulled up closely behind me, blaring its loud, intimidating siren.

I had been speeding, driving a stolen vehicle registered to my sister, with a child Mark claimed I had kidnapped.

"Get down on the floorboard and cover yourself with this blanket, Leo," I instructed urgently.

He scrambled down into the dark footwell, completely vanishing beneath the heavy wool blanket.

I pulled over to the shoulder of the highway, rolling down my window and placing my hands firmly on the wheel.

The police officer walked up to my window, shining a blinding flashlight directly into my eyes.

"License and registration, please, Mrs. Davis," the officer said, completely ignoring standard protocol.

He already knew exactly who I was before I even handed him my identification.
