Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

The digital progress bar on Marcus’s tablet raced toward one hundred percent, permanently sealing Eleanor’s terrible fate.
Within seconds, the highly sensitive financial data was sent anonymously to every rival cartel boss in the southern hemisphere.
The files completely exposed how Eleanor had been stealing millions from her own dangerous criminal partners for over a decade.
We watched through the binoculars as the chaotic results of the massive data leak unfolded almost immediately on the tarmac.
The heavily armed cartel mercenaries guarding the private jet suddenly began checking their vibrating satellite phones.
Their relaxed, professional demeanor shifted instantly into aggressive, violent confusion as they read the damning financial evidence.
The mercenary commander aggressively signaled his men to completely surround the black jet and block the runway with armored trucks.
Eleanor suddenly appeared at the door of the plane, screaming furiously at the armed men to let her pilot take off.
The commander ignored her demands, unholstering his weapon and marching directly up the mobile boarding stairs.
He grabbed Eleanor roughly by her expensive coat, dragging her screaming and kicking down onto the hard concrete runway.
Tyler watched his mother’s empire completely collapse from the window of our van, sobbing pathetically through his duct-taped mouth.
He finally realized that the wealth and power he had sacrificed his own wife and child for were completely gone forever.
I asked Marcus to connect a secure audio line to the airstrip’s main communication tower so I could deliver one final message.
He hacked the radio frequency quickly, patching my voice directly into the massive loudspeaker system echoing across the entire compound.
I picked up the microphone and spoke with a calm, absolute authority that cut through the desert wind.
I proudly told Eleanor that her money was gone, her secrets were exposed, and her family name was completely ruined.
I stated that she would spend the rest of her miserable life rotting in a cartel prison for the money she had stolen.
Eleanor stared wildly up at the dark ridge where we were parked, her face twisting in pure, unadulterated hatred.
She violently ripped a pistol from the holster of the nearest mercenary and pointed it wildly toward the dark hills.
Before she could even pull the trigger, the cartel commander raised his assault rifle and shot her in the shoulder.
Eleanor collapsed onto the tarmac, completely defeated, bleeding, and surrounded by heavily armed men who wanted their money back.
Marcus cut the radio feed and put the armored van into reverse, slowly driving us away from the chaotic, burning compound.
I turned around in my seat and looked at Rachel, who was gently rocking Lily back to sleep in the dim cabin light.

The nightmare was officially over, and the monsters who had tried to destroy us were finally facing their own terrible reckoning.
Suddenly, a bright, blinding spotlight from a massive, unmarked drone locked directly onto our moving vehicle from the sky above.
