Chapter 3 - The Unlikely Ally

The deafening sound of a gunshot echoed through the sterile hospital corridor.
My vision was already blurring from the heavy sedative, but I saw the man holding me suddenly collapse to the floor.
The second man reached for his own weapon, but Vanessa fired another precise shot into his kneecap.
He screamed in agony, dropping his gun and clutching his shattered leg as blood pooled on the white tiles.
Vanessa rushed over to me, grabbing my heavy arm and pulling me away from the wall.
Her hands were shaking violently, and her expensive mascara was running in dark streaks down her pale face.
She dragged me toward the emergency stairwell, completely ignoring the blaring security alarms echoing throughout the building.
I struggled to keep my heavy legs moving as the powerful drug fought to drag my consciousness into the dark.
I slurred my words, asking this terrible woman why she was suddenly trying to save my life.
Vanessa kicked the heavy metal stairwell door open and pushed me down the first flight of concrete steps.
She cried out that Eleanor had planned to murder her tonight and frame her for the hot car incident.
Tyler had secretly promised Vanessa a lavish life, but she was always just a disposable scapegoat for their crimes.
She realized that if she let them kill me, she would have absolutely no one left to testify on her behalf.
We stumbled out of the side exit and into the humid, rainy night of the hospital parking lot.
Vanessa shoved me into the passenger seat of her sleek sports car and peeled out of the lot just as police cruisers arrived.
I fought the heavy fog in my brain, demanding to know where Eleanor had taken my daughter and my granddaughter.
Vanessa gripped the steering wheel tightly and said they were taking them to the family’s private psychiatric compound in the mountains.
Eleanor owned a remote, heavily guarded medical facility designed for wealthy families to quietly dispose of their problematic relatives.
They were going to lock Rachel away forever under the guise of severe postpartum psychosis.
Lily would be raised exclusively by Eleanor, completely isolated from the mother who truly loved her.
I reached into my pocket, my numb fingers searching for my phone to call the only person who could help us.
My late husband had been a private intelligence contractor, and he had left me an emergency contact number for a rainy day.
I finally managed to dial the encrypted number just as my eyelids grew too heavy to keep open.
A deep, mechanical voice answered the line, asking for the authorization code.
I whispered my husband's final password into the receiver before dropping the phone onto the floorboard.

Vanessa slammed on the brakes, throwing me forward against the seatbelt as the car skidded to a violent halt.
I forced my eyes open just enough to see a massive barricade of black SUVs completely blocking the highway ahead of us.
