Chapter 2 - The Hospital Ambush

I did not wait for the detective to make a decision about arresting me.

I grabbed my purse, shoved my way past Tyler and his smug lawyer, and sprinted out the front door.

I drove my car far above the speed limit, weaving recklessly through the evening city traffic.

My mind was completely consumed by the terrifying image of Eleanor getting her hands on my fragile granddaughter.

I finally reached the hospital and practically ran through the sliding glass emergency doors.

I ignored the shouting security guards and rushed directly toward the intensive care wing where I had left Rachel.

When I burst into the recovery room, the hospital bed was empty and the sheets were violently torn.

An elderly nurse was picking up a shattered plastic water pitcher from the linoleum floor.

She looked at me with wide, terrified eyes and told me that the men in dark suits had just taken my daughter.

I grabbed the nurse by the shoulders and demanded to know where they had taken my newborn granddaughter.

The nurse stammered that a wealthy woman matching Eleanor's description had presented federal custody papers ten minutes ago.

Eleanor had calmly walked out of the neonatal ward carrying Lily in a brand-new carrier.

When Rachel had woken up and realized her baby was gone, she had fought the doctors with hysterical, panicked strength.

The nurse confessed that the doctors had been forced to heavily sedate Rachel to stop her from hurting herself.

I felt a massive wave of absolute failure crash over me as I let go of the trembling nurse.

Tyler and Eleanor had orchestrated this entire nightmare with terrifying military precision.

They had used the legal system as a weapon to completely erase my daughter’s entire life in a single afternoon.

I turned around to run toward the elevator, desperately hoping to catch Eleanor in the parking garage.

Before I could even take three steps into the hallway, two massive men in dark tailored suits blocked my path.

They did not look like standard hospital security or local police officers.

One of the massive men reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, metallic syringe filled with a cloudy liquid.

He quietly informed me that Eleanor sends her regards and thinks I need to get some sleep.

I screamed for help, but the hospital hallway had suddenly become completely, unnervingly deserted.

The second man grabbed my arms with crushing force, pinning me against the cold cinderblock wall.

I squeezed my eyes shut as the needle pierced my neck, plunging the freezing liquid directly into my bloodstream.

The last thing I saw before the darkness took me was Vanessa stepping off the elevator, pointing a gun directly at the men.
