Chapter 4 - The Ghost Network

Vanessa threw the sports car into reverse, the tires screaming violently against the wet asphalt.
She tried to spin the vehicle around to escape, but two more black SUVs emerged from the side streets, boxing us in perfectly.
The blinding glare of military-grade headlights flooded the cabin of our trapped car.
Dozens of men dressed in unmarked tactical gear stepped out of the heavy vehicles, raising high-powered rifles.
Vanessa began to panic, crying hysterically and begging me to do something before they executed us both.
I could barely lift my head due to the powerful sedative coursing through my veins, but I noticed something strange about the men.
They were not pointing their weapons directly at our sports car.
They were forming a defensive perimeter around us, aiming their rifles outward into the dark tree line.
A tall man with silver hair and a deep scar across his jaw walked calmly toward my passenger window.
He tapped on the glass, offering a respectful nod that I instantly recognized from my husband's funeral five years ago.
It was Marcus, my late husband’s most trusted operative and the current head of a private ghost network.
Vanessa rolled the window down with trembling fingers, completely terrified of the armed men surrounding her.
Marcus looked at me and softly said that my husband had paid for a lifetime protection policy, and it was time to collect.
He ordered his men to load me onto a medical stretcher hidden in the back of a heavily armored transport van.
A field medic immediately administered a powerful stimulant directly into my arm to counteract Eleanor’s dangerous sedative.
My vision cleared instantly, and the heavy fog in my brain was replaced by a sharp, burning adrenaline.
I sat up in the back of the moving van, staring at Marcus as he laid out a tactical map of Eleanor's mountain compound.
He explained that the facility was a fortress, protected by electrified fences, armed mercenaries, and corrupt local police.
Breaking Rachel and Lily out through a direct frontal assault would result in a massive and bloody gunfight.
Marcus handed me a sleek, suppressed pistol and told me that we were not going to fight our way in.
He pulled up a digital blueprint on his tablet, pointing to a forgotten subterranean drainage tunnel beneath the compound.
My husband had actually been the one who designed the security system for Eleanor's facility over a decade ago.
He had secretly built a backdoor into the system, knowing that Eleanor was a monster who could never be trusted.
Marcus looked me dead in the eye and asked if I was ready to burn a billionaire's empire to the ground.
I chambered a round into the pistol and nodded, my heart pounding with fierce maternal rage.
Suddenly, Marcus’s encrypted radio crackled to life with a frantic, terrifying transmission from his scout team.

The scout reported that a medical helicopter was currently powering up on the compound's private roof.
Eleanor was moving Lily out of the country tonight, and the helicopter was preparing to take off in exactly ten minutes.
