Chapter 6 - The Showdown

The courtroom was freezing cold and smelled like old wood and floor wax.

I sat next to David at the defendant's table, wearing my sharpest business suit.

Ashley sat across the aisle, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue to look like a heartbroken victim.

My parents sat directly behind her, refusing to even make eye contact with me.

Brent's lawyer stood up and presented the forged deed to the new judge, who had replaced his corrupt uncle.

My mother actually took the witness stand and swore under oath that I had confessed to stealing the money.

It was sickening how easily the lies poured out of her mouth.

When it was our turn, David did not bother calling me to the stand.

Instead, he addressed the judge with a calm, terrifying smile.

"Your Honor, the defense calls Mr. Marcus Vance to the stand," David announced.

Ashley gasped loudly, and Brent's face drained of all color.

The back doors of the courtroom swung open, and the professional forger from the parking lot walked down the aisle.
