Chapter 1 - The Email

The subject line of the email read "Notice of Pending Litigation" in cold, sharp letters.

I stared at my laptop screen while the afternoon sun faded over the lake.

My mother's voice still echoed in my head, a chilling reminder that my family had orchestrated this entire nightmare.

I clicked the attachment with trembling fingers.

It was a formal demand letter from a prestigious law firm downtown.

They were claiming that my house was purchased with stolen funds from an undisclosed family trust.

According to the document, my grandmother had left explicit oral instructions that her money was for Brent's parents to retire comfortably.

It was an absolute lie.

Grandma Evelyn could barely tolerate Brent, let alone his financially irresponsible parents.

I grabbed my phone and immediately called my best friend, David, who happened to be a ruthless corporate litigator.

He answered on the first ring, his voice calm despite my frantic breathing.

I forwarded him the email and waited in agonizing silence while he read through the allegations.

I could hear the rhythmic tapping of his keyboard through the speaker.

"Mandy, this is a heavily fabricated document, but they attached a notarized affidavit sworn by a witness," David finally said.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Who would possibly swear to something that never happened?" I asked.

David sighed heavily before reading the name at the bottom of the page.

"The notary seal belongs to your father."
