Chapter 3 - The Invasion

I sprinted out of the bank and practically flew to my SUV.

If Brent was willing to fake my medical incapacity, there was no limit to what he might do next.

I broke three speed limits rushing back to my lakeside property.

As I turned onto my private gravel driveway, my blood ran completely cold.

A massive yellow moving truck was parked squarely in front of my front door.

Two men in blue overalls were carrying my custom cream armchair out onto the lawn.

Standing on my porch, holding a clipboard and looking incredibly smug, was Brent's mother.

I slammed my car into park and jumped out, screaming at the movers to drop my furniture immediately.

Brent's mother smirked and slowly walked down the steps to meet me.

"You have no right to be here, Mandy," she said in a sickly sweet tone.

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911, demanding police assistance for a home invasion.

Two patrol cars arrived within five minutes, sirens blaring and lights flashing.

I ran up to the first officer, pointing at the moving truck and begging him to arrest these trespassers.

The officer held up his hand, pulled a folded piece of paper from his vest, and handed it to me.

"I am sorry, ma'am, but this is a court-ordered eviction notice, and you have exactly ten minutes to leave the premises or I will have to arrest you."
