Chapter 4 - The Motel Room

The smell of stale cigarette smoke and cheap bleach burned my nose.

I sat on the edge of a sagging mattress in a roadside motel, clutching a plastic cup of tap water.

David was pacing across the stained carpet, furiously reviewing the eviction notice the police had handed me.

"This makes absolutely no sense," David muttered, running a hand through his hair.

"No judge signs an emergency eviction and asset freeze without a preliminary hearing," he continued.

He opened his laptop and began running background checks on the signature at the bottom of the order.

The judge's name was Honorable Thomas Vance.

I watched David's eyes widen as he connected the dots on a legal database.

"Mandy, look at this," he said, turning the screen toward me.

Judge Thomas Vance was heavily featured in a local country club newsletter from three years ago.

Standing right next to him, with his arm draped over the judge's shoulder, was Brent.

The caption identified the judge as Brent's paternal uncle.

"This is judicial misconduct on a massive scale," David said, his voice trembling with a mix of rage and excitement.

"Wait, there is something else attached to the probate files in the county server," David added, clicking furiously.

He opened a scanned document that had been filed incorrectly and hidden from public view.

"Your grandmother Evelyn had a second, secret will."
