Chapter 7 - The Court Battle

The sterile walls of the family courthouse felt like a suffocating concrete cage.
I sat at the petitioner's table beside Attorney Sterling, clutching my trembling hands together in my lap.
Greg sat at the opposite table, wearing a perfectly tailored suit and a mask of fake concern.
My parents and Karla were sitting directly behind him in the gallery, smiling arrogantly at me.
The stern judge entered the courtroom and banged his heavy wooden gavel to begin the hearing.
Greg’s expensive lawyer stood up and presented a horrifying narrative to the judge.
He claimed I was a homeless, unstable mother who had dragged a toddler into extreme poverty.
He used the boarding house address as proof that I was entirely incapable of providing a safe environment.
My father took the witness stand and swore under oath that I was deeply mentally ill.
My mother testified that I had violently abandoned the family home without any provocation.
The judge frowned deeply and looked at me with clear disappointment in his eyes.
It felt like the entire world was successfully conspiring to rip my sweet daughter out of my arms.
Then Attorney Sterling stood up, buttoned his suit jacket, and approached the center podium.
"Your Honor, the opposing counsel has presented a brilliant work of complete fiction," Sterling announced loudly.
He handed a thick stack of certified documents directly to the court clerk.
Sterling presented the original property deed proving I was the sole wealthy owner of a massive apartment.
He presented the utility bills showing my parents had committed identity theft against a two-year-old child.
Finally, he presented the rejected loan application bearing the forged signatures of Karla and Greg.
The judge’s face turned an ugly shade of dark purple as he reviewed the undeniable federal evidence.
He slammed his gavel down and glared directly at Greg and my terrified family.
"This court does not tolerate blatant perjury or malicious fraud," the judge roared furiously.
He signaled for the two armed bailiffs standing near the heavy wooden doors.
"Arrest that man immediately for attempting to defraud this court," the judge ordered.
The bailiffs grabbed Greg by the arms, completely ignoring his sudden, pathetic screams for mercy.

Greg thrashed wildly and pointed a desperate finger directly at my trembling parents.
"I did not forge the loan documents by myself!" Greg screamed as the steel handcuffs clicked shut.
