Chapter 4 - The Utility Trap

The police officers escorted me out of the building to prevent any further escalation.
I stood on the sidewalk and watched Greg waving at me from the living room window.
My own parents had moved my abusive ex-husband into my home just to spite me.
They were openly conspiring with him to drain the massive equity out of my property.
I buckled Sophia into her car seat and promised her that the bad men would not win.
I drove to the main office of the city utility department before they closed for the day.
Since I was the legal owner of the property, all the utility accounts were exclusively in my name.
I approached the clerk at the desk and requested an immediate shutoff of all services.
I authorized the complete disconnection of the electricity, water, and natural gas at the apartment.
The clerk processed my request and assured me the entire building would be dark within an hour.
I returned to the modest boarding house and waited for the inevitable fallout.
My phone remained completely silent for the entire evening.
I expected my mother to call and scream about the power outage, but she never did.
The next morning, I called Attorney Sterling to update him on the desperate situation.
I proudly told him about my tactical decision to shut off the vital utilities.
Sterling typed on his computer for a few minutes before letting out a sharp gasp.
"Laura, the utility accounts at that address are currently active and running at full capacity," he warned.
"That is impossible because I stood there and watched the clerk disconnect them," I argued.
"Someone called the utility company late last night and reestablished service under a new name," Sterling explained.
He pulled up the digital public records to see who had claimed the new accounts.
"They opened the new accounts using a completely different social security number," he said.
I asked him whose name was listed on the fraudulent utility bills.

Sterling hesitated for a long moment before answering me in a terrified whisper.
"They used Sophia's social security number to open the accounts in your toddler's name."
